Herrad of Landsberg

Herrad of Landsberg (1125-1195) lived as a nun and later as an abbess at the Hohenburg Abbey in the Vosges. She became known as the author of the illustrated encyclopedia 'Hortus deliciarum' (or 'Garden of Delights'). The 'Hortus deliciarum' summarized all spiritual and worldly knowledge of the High Middle Ages. With this work, she aimed to improve the education of the young nuns in her convent. The work is known as the first encyclopedia compiled by a woman.
