Nothing At All exposition Gerbrand Burger: walk in September 6

The exhibition Nothing At All from Gerbrand Burger showcases the outcome of a long-term development in the work of the artist. It can be seen from September 5 to November 1. On Sunday, September 6 from 11 – 17 the artist will be there to answer questions.

By working with old and partially rotted wood collected from the summerhouse in Finland where the artist often stays, Burger introduces an active process of decay into his work. Embracing similar processes is part of his intention to break away from normative processes in art and society, where the importance of humans is often weighed most heavily, often to the detriment of other inhabitants of the living world.

Burger is inspired by the work of Japanese microbiologist and philosopher Masanobu Fukuoka. Fukuoka’s approach focuses on the knowledge that is inherently present in the living world and prioritizes careful observation and listening to get closer to this knowledge, rather than constantly taking action. Burger forms a close relationship with the materials he works with and gives them plenty of space within the artistic process. He often harvests the wood he uses himself, consciously opts for as few external, artificial materials as possible, and embraces natural processes of decay and transformation. The idea behind this is that the work can always break down and become part of the environment again, staying part of the material cycle.
